HESTON'S IMPACT

Heston Russell is a retired Special Forces Major and decorated combat Veteran who has dedicated his life to serving his country and advocating for the Veteran community. Joining the Australian Army at 17, Heston followed in his father's footsteps, serving over twenty years. He completed his Bachelor of Arts at the University of New South Wales and graduated from the Royal Military College of Duntroon in 2006. Heston's military career included deployments to Timor Leste, Afghanistan, the Middle East, and domestic counter-terrorism operations. He served in various leadership roles within the Special Forces, including Platoon Commander and Commando Officer. In 2017, Heston transitioned from the military and later founded Voice Of A Veteran, a platform aimed at supporting Veterans and advocating for systemic changes within government policies.

In 2020, Heston initiated successful campaigns such as retaining the Meritorious Unit Citation award for Special Forces personnel and reinstating the Sydney CBD ANZAC Day march. His advocacy efforts led to the approval of a Royal Commission into Defence & Veteran Suicide, highlighting his commitment to addressing critical issues facing Veterans. Currently, Heston leads the Veteran Support Force (VSF.org.au), an organization dedicated to supporting Veterans and their families during the Royal Commission. Additionally, he is a sought-after public speaker focusing on themes including leadership, mental health, and diversity. Heston resides in Queensland with his Mini-Dachshund, Copper.
